Why did you want to have a drought friendly landscape?
The situation with our water supply is dire. We felt it very important to create a lovely garden to be visually pleasing but also support a reduced water demand.
Biggest Challenge
Finding the right landscaper who understood this minimalist approach and working with me to get the right look and design

How easy is it to maintain?
We have a very simple drip line installed throughout the entire front yard and parkway area for water. The drip line is set on a timer to for a few times per week. Not much water is needed at all to maintain. Every weekend we spend a few minutes cleaning up dead leaves
Biggest Challenge
The design and placement of the plants. We had no idea what should go where. That's why we trusted our landscaper.

How did you work with your HOA
Sent in blueprints with changes and plant choices. The HOA wanted to make sure we were considering drainage and keeping it as originally designated by the builder.

Biggest Challenge
Dealing with the HOA was the biggest challenge in transforming my front yard to a drought resistant landscape. The review process for my particular HOA was very tedius and time consuming. Since I was one of the first residents in my association to transform my front yard to drought resistant landscaping the HOA was using outdated standards in which to base their decisions/approvals. There were many challenges in dealing with the plant to hard-scape ratio which the HOA is still in the process of revising their architectural landscape requirements to reflect the current environmental concerns in our area.

I only water once every 2 weeks. There is some weeding to do. I strongly advise using a weed-barrier in addition to taking out the grass. This was not done for my yard.

"We hand water once or twice a month, fertilize when I think about it, some weeding, cut off dead blooms. It's so easy to maintain that I really don't do anything but enjoy it!
